FAQs

How long will my project take?

1

Highlands Landscaping and Fencing can do up to $5,500 worth of work in a day - so we don't start a project, leave it for a while, and then return. We complete the projects quickly so you can have a nice transformation in even a day or two!

Depending on size and scope, projects can take anywhere from one day to two months. Smaller projects like plant installs take up to a day or two, patio builds take about a week, and full-yard projects take anywhere from two weeks to two months depending on yard size.

How do estimates work?

2

We can usually schedule an estimate within a week. During this visit, one of our estimators/desingers will walk the property with you to discuss your needs, potential solutions, and pricing. Afterward, we will draw up and email your estimate within a few days.

Do you have a project size limit?

3

Yes, our project minimum is usually around $5,500, which is one day of work. Depending on how our winter schedule, we can usually take on smaller projects during that time.

Do you work on historic homes?

4

Yes, we have done many projects on historic homes and understand the rules and guidelines.

Do we need a permit for our project?

5

  • Denver Front Yards: Walls over 13" tall require a permit.

  • All Other Walls: Permit required if over 4' tall.

  • Fences: Permit required for most wood fences over 6' and all fences over 8'.

  • Xeriscaping: May require city approval (e.g., Arvada’s new regulations).

  • Sod: Denver and other counties might require permits for sod during a stage 1 drought.

  • Our Policy: We can handle the permit submission for you for an additional administrative charge.

Do you handle the HOA approval process?

6

Every HOA has unique, strict guidelines and requires a detailed, professional plan detailing the exact project specifications before granting approval. Due to these requirements, a design fee is typically applied to projects.

While the actual application usually needs to be signed and submitted by you (the homeowner), Highlands Landscaping will provide you with all the necessary technical drawings, site plans, and material descriptions required for your submission packet. We are also happy to make any design adjustments requested by your HOA board to ensure your project gets approved.

Who should I talk to before and after my project starts?

7

You may discuss materials and planning with your designer or estimator during the planning stages.  About 2-3 weeks before the project starts, your designer/estimator will walk through the project with you and the Project Manager; then hand it off to the Project Manager to run the crew and complete your project.  After the project walkthrough, you can discuss any details with the Project Manager.

How does your payment structure work?

8

Our payment structure is 20% down to hold your place on the calendar and allow us to order your supplies, then 40% paid the day we start work and 40% final payment once work is complete.

We accept cash, check, Zelle, credit card - even AMEX, or ACH payments.

9

Can I just get a design?

As a design/build firm, our primary focus is bringing projects to life from concept to completion, so we rarely sell standalone designs. However, if you are looking to purchase a design concept only, we can accommodate that. Our custom design fees vary based on the scope of the project, typically averaging between $800 and $1,000.

What type of landscaping should I get done if I want minimal maintenance?

10

If you want minimal maintenance, going with xeriscaping, or hardscaping, or a mix of the two is your best bet. Both of these services require the least amount of maintenance and save a lot of water by working with the Colorado climate.
